Wiki Version:
This study follows on a series of studies we have performed investigating tolerance through the use of a novel experimental manipulation to capture the complexity of the tolerance experience and contrast it to the experiences of full acceptance and rejection as a minority member in society. Distinctly in this study, we look into the comparison. Tolerance (or acceptance and rejection) do not exist in a vaccuum. Indeed, for this reason people talk about the distinct experiences and expectations of first and second generation immigrants, leading to very different feelings of their societal treatment. Therefore, in this study, participants experience tolerance contrasted with either acceptance or rejection, counterbalanced by order (creating four conditions). Importantly, this study builds on a pilot performed for a different study. Thus, 182 participants' data was collected as part of an unregistered pilot, and here we are collecting data from at least an additional 218 participants to complete the sample before performing analyses on the full dataset. We will aim for 250 more, with the hope of having 100 participants per condition following any exclusions (see discussions in the pre-registration).
