Wiki Version:
In this project we harmonized election outcome data from 15 countries with the aim of calculating a measure of the electoral urban-rural divide that is comparable over time and between countries. The election outcome data from all countries are national election results disaggregated at the lowest possible geographic level, for most countries the municipality level and for some countries the constituency level. For an application of the urban-rural divide measures, see: Huijsmans, T. & Rodden, J. (2024) The Great Global Divider? A Comparison of Urban-Rural Partisan Polarization in Western Democracies. Comparative Political Studies. At this OSF-page we share the harmonized datasets, a codebook of these datasets, as well as the codes to replicate the analyses from the abovementioned study. If you have any questions or remarks about the data, please feel free to reach out at t.m.huijsmans@uva.nl. We hope that we can keep the dataset up to date with new elections, and that we will be able to broaden the scope of the dataset by including more countries, preferably also increasing the diversity in our sample of countries. If you want to contribute to the dataset, for example by including an additional country or election, please let us know so we can give you access to the project and can help in updating the current dataset.
