*The full scope and guiding framework for this project is described in our protocol paper [[Hoekstra & Mrklas et al. 2018][1]].* ## Overview ### Goals This study will systematically scope literature on different types of research partnership approaches. The three main aims of this study are: 1. To comparatively describe and synthesize principles, strategies, outcomes and impacts reported in different research partnership approaches within and beyond health; 2. To describe and synthesize the principles, strategies, outcomes and impacts and the accompanying research methods and tools, reported in different types of health research partnership studies; 3. To amalgamate and reflect on the collective findings and identify research gaps and future directions. ### Outcomes This review project has 5 primary outcomes: **1 review of reviews** addressing key domains (principles, strategies, outcomes, and impacts) for different research partnership approaches, within and beyond health; **3 scoping reviews** addressing these domains further in the health research partnership literature; **1 umbrella review** synthesizing and aggregating the findings from the review of reviews and scoping reviews. Each of these reviews is described in detail in their respective modules. Modules including search strategies and methods as they develop will be made public. ### Strategy At the outset, the terminology around research partnership is ambiguous and the authors are anticipating different language to be used in different research domains. The synthesis will be conducted in three steps: 1. A review of reviews on different types of research partnership approaches will be conducted, using a broad search strategy. This step will help to identify the terminology and research scope of research partnership approaches within and beyond health. 2. From this review, key papers will be identified and a targeted search methodology will be developed for each of the three scoping reviews. 3. An umbrella review will be conducted to amalgamate and reflect on the findings of all four reviews. ### The Team This project is being coordinated across 6 Canadian academic and healthcare centers: **University of Ottawa** **Ottawa Hospital Research Institute** **University of Manitoba** **University of Calgary** **Alberta Health Services** **University of British Columbia, Okanagan** This work will be conducted as part of a Coordinated Multicenter Team, leveraging expertise and workflow efficiencies. Throughout the process, we will also engage a diverse group of stakeholders in different stages of the research process using an integrated knowledge translation approach.
