This project contains selected research instruments and selected code for my PhD project "Phonological processing skills and their longitudinal relation to first and additional language literacy in isiXhosa and isiZulu speaking children".
The project is still being run so check back regularly for updates.
In this longitudinal project, phonological awareness, rapid automatised naming, phonological working memory and literacy skills were measured towards the end of Grade 1 (2019), and the start of Grade 3 (2021). Because of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, only literacy variables will be measured towards the middle of Grade 3 (2021).
I created parallel isiXhosa and isiZulu phonological processing and literacy assessments to measure these constructs. Their development was informed by standardised American English tests including the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing and the Diagnostic Test of Word Reading Processes. These isiXhosa and isiZulu tests are available on OSF in [the component to this project][1]. Because of copyright, these English assessments are not uploaded to this project. Detailed information about the test development process is included in my thesis. I hope to submit the thesis by the first quarter of 2022.
I also adapted the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test IV into isiXhosa and isiZulu. Again, these are not shared due to copyright constraints.
Please let me know if you use the assessments for your own project, and if you have any feedback. I am also very happy to collaborate, so please reach out! Find me on Twitter @MaxineNSchaefer
