# Data Dictionary ## For files ending in `compiled.csv` ### `X` Row number. This is not a useful variable and is an artifact of the script that generated the file. It may be safely ignored. ### `v` This variable indicates the value of the resource. It is the parameter 'v' in the model presented in the paper. ### `a` This variable indicates the scale of competition, ranging from strictly global (a = 0) to strictly local (a = 1). ### `doves` (called `dovesa` in `pilot1_compiled.csv`, `pilot4_compiled.csv`, and `pilot3_compiled.csv`) This variable represents the number of doves observed ### `total` (reported as `n` in `round_1_compiled.csv` ) This is the total number of observations for the specified levels of `a` and `v` ### `mu` The proportion of doves to total. This is the expected likelihood of a dove. ### `ci` A quantity equal to `1.95*sqrt(mu*(1-mu))/total)`. The 95\% confidence interval for `mu` is given by `mu` +/- `ci` ## Files ending in `individual_records.csv` These files detail the individual responses. Most of the columns names refer directly to the questions from the survey. They are cumbersome to parse and not directly suitable for analysis. Curious researchers can cross-reference the column names with the language in the survey instrument to determine the question to which a given column corresponds. We detail here the remaining, useful columns from these datasets. ### `p_test` and `p_game` These columns refer to the version of the game that the respondent was exposed to for the comprehension test and then the actual hawk-dove game used to assess bonuses and conduct the analysis. The `p_test` column provides the version for the comprehension test. The `p_game` column provides the version used in the actual HDG used in analysis. There is a direct correspondence between the version of the game listed in `p_test` and the version listed in `p_game`. ### `k`,`v`,`a` Each of these columns correspond to parameters of the evolutionary model as described in the paper. From the values of these parameters, one can determine which version of the game the participant was shown. Note, only `v` and `a` are manipulated in the data; `k` is always 100. ### `Are.you.Male.or.Female` This column indicates the gender of the respondent. ### `What.is.your.age.` This column provides the age indicated by the respondent. ### `Is.English.your.First.Language.` and `If.you.answered..no..to.Question.3..would.you.say.that.you.speak.English.as.well.as.someone.who.has.English.as.their.first.language.` These columns indicate the English proficiency of the respondent. ### `game` This column provides the response of the respondent in the HDG used for analysis. ### `hawks` and `doves` These are binary representations of the respondent response provided in `game` ### `total` This column lists the total number of participants in a given treatment group.
