Wiki Version:
Published study: Maes, C., & Vandenbosch, L. (2021). “Consent Is Sexy”: exploring the portrayal of prosocial sexuality messages in youth-oriented series. Journal of Children and Media, 1-20. https://doi.org/10.1080/17482798.2021.1982741 This content analysis aimed to explore the occurrence of prosocial sexuality messages in youth-oriented series. A total of 126 characters (52% male, 48% female) and 3,151 scenes in 65 episodes (of the final seasons) were coded. The PSMs, which were related to the antisocial sexuality messages in the scenes, occurred approximately four times per episode (i.e., 36 minutes) . No genre difference was found; however, positive sexual behavior was portrayed more frequently by the characters in comedies than those in dramas. Positive sexuality was portrayed more frequently by non-heterosexual characters than heterosexual characters. No significant gender difference was found. The implications for the field and audience effects are discussed.
