Testing Theoretical Explanations -------------------------------- As expected, we replicated the negative associations between actors' and partners' pornography use and sexual / relationship satisfaction, the positive buffering effect of concordant solitary pornography use, and the positive associations between shared use and these endpoints. We (Kohut, Balzarini, Fisher & Campbell, under review) have previously argued that the positive interaction between partners' solitary pornography use and relational endpoints and the positive association between shared pornography use and these endpoints are likely the consequence of different theoretical mechanisms. First, concordant solitary use and shared use, while correlated at the level of the dyad, are empirically distinct phenomena (Fisher, Kohut, & Campbell, in prep). Second, all of our tests to date, across a range of endpoints, indicate that concordant use and shared use independently predict relational endpoints. Third, the frequency of shared pornography use is correlated with higher relational functioning, while frequency of concordant use is not. The goal of the current line of research is to test various theoretical explanations for the buffering effects of concordant solitary pornography use. Explanations for the association between the frequency of shared pornography use and sexual / relationship satisfaction will be considered at a later date.
