Description: This dataset provides detailed information about 41 apps that comprise the global landscape of ‘super apps’, as curated in March 2023. This information includes: (a) details about each Android app (N = 41) collected Google Play (play.google.com) using the ASI/DMI Google Play Scraper (http://appstudies.org/tools/); (b) additional information about each app, including APIs and SDKs listed on their websites; (c) ownership information about each app, including immediate app owners and ‘parent’ holding companies from data.ai (formerly App Annie); (d) the names and initial release dates of any other apps from the same owners (N = 12,719), including those that have previously been ‘removed from the store’ (N = 8,442); (e) detailed primary and secondary service category (‘genre’ and ‘subgenre’) information from data.ai’s taxonomies of ‘App IQ Classification’ and ‘Game IQ Classification’; and (f) geographic market information from Sensor Tower, including ‘inactive’ and ‘top’ countries or regions served by each app. Google Play Store app details were collected on March 10, all other information on March 27–28. The dataset is deposited for the (open access) journal article: van der Vlist, F. N., Helmond, A., Dieter, M., & Weltevrede, E. (2024) Super-appification: Conglomeration in the global app economy.
