This literature review summarizes knowledge on dietary diversity as an indicator of micronutrient malnutrition, and highlights research and development opportunities related to dietary diversity and mHealth interventions. The first part of the review is concerned with the global burden of malnutrition and the strategies adopted in the management of acute malnutrition. The review then provides a definition of dietary diversity and explains a methodology for measuring dietary diversity at household and individual levels.
The next section examines factors that affect consumption of diversified diets in low income countries. This is followed by a discussion of the evidence from mHealth interventions aimed at improving the management of malnutrition. The final section of the review discusses opportunities for integrating dietary diversity into existing Medic Mobile workflows.
