There are numerous complications and ambiguities when talking about the rights afforded to you by a certain piece of content, software, application, etc. As such, a researcher may find it difficult to determine whether they can use another’s work or even whether others can use their own work. This workshop aims to provide a high-level overview of rights provided by a license, terms of use/service, and private policy and when it is appropriate to use them. Additionally, this workshop will attempt to partially disambiguate the differences between the different types of licenses and whether they are considered to be ‘open’ by the guidelines provided by the Center of Open Science (COS).
Workshop participants will learn:
1. Different Types of Licensing Decisions
a. License and Contributor Licensing Agreement (CLA)
b. Terms of Service / Terms of Use and Private Policy
c. Consent Forms
2. How to select the appropriate ones for your work
3. How do these licensing decisions affect open science and research
4. Where to find resources for helping with licensing decisions
