Wiki Version:
This is the project repository of "The Impact of Auditory Distraction on Reading Comprehension: An Individual Differences Investigation". The repository is consist of three major corresponding materials for this project: [Experimental Materials][1], [Data & R Scripts][2], and [Writings][3]. The project was [pre-registered][4] before the initial data collection. However, there are several details in [the final manuscript][5] deviated from the initial pre-registered proposal. The major changes were listed as follows: 1) Power analyses pre-registered (as was described in the proposal) were changed in the 2nd draft and therefore are different from the initial proposal. [The updated power analyses][6] led to a decision of increasing the target sample size from 90 to 120. See details regarding the updated power analyses in the final manuscript. 2) Data exclusion criteria were updated in the final manuscript. The focus of data exclusion shifted from accuracy in complex span tasks to reading speed. See details in the manuscript. 3) The first two sets of data analyses (both in the proposal and the manuscript) were planned to test the two confirmatory hypotheses that were made based on evidences in [previous research][7]. The ANOVA analysis tests Hypothesis 1 and the correlation comparison (transformed in the final draft to a slope comparison of a bivariate regression between two groups) tests Hypothesis 2. These two sets of data analyses were consistent between the registered proposal and the final manuscript. The third set of data analyses (regression model comparisons) were exploratory and were changed in the final manuscript because the initial approach in the pre-registered proposal was surpassed by generalized linear mixed effect models, in which within-group variables can be analyzed appropriately. The updated analyses were described in the final manuscript in details and labeled as "Exploratory Analyses" in the results section.
