This paper examines the level of representation that is responsible for misinterpretations in garden-path sentences. We combined reading measures with an offline comprehension task which enabled us to conditionalize eye movement analyses on correct versus incorrect question-answering performance. Our results suggest that comprehenders can succeed at syntactic reanalysis regardless of their response accuracy.

While conducting the second study and analyses, we discovered an RA coding error from double checking the stimuli. After correcting the coding, the results changed in the first study and the new pattern was replicated in the second study.
