Wiki Version:
Hello everyone! Below, you'll find the poster itself, the abstract, and a short video walk through (~ 5 min). There is also a transcript of the video. We will be hosting a Zoom meeting where you can chat with us about our research! Just go to https://zoom.us/j/249011488 We'll make sure there is at least one of the authors available at any time during Poster Session B: Fri 12:10 to 14:00 EDT If you'd rather use the chat to ask questions or give comments, please feel free to do so! Grammatical constraints on focus alternatives? The case of phi-features in Czech Do semantically inert phi-features such as gender play a role in the comprehension of focus? Previous research suggested that in addition to context, purely grammatical information could restrict focus alternatives. In this study, we tested whether in Czech, the grammatical gender feature restricts alternatives to focused nouns. We ran two acceptability judgment experiments (timed and untimed) and a probe recognition experiment using only to induce focus status. We failed to find evidence for gender playing a role in the generation of alternatives, suggesting that syntactic constraints on focus alternatives may be limited.
