Wiki Version:
We will randomly assign men and women to either a fat condition or a skinny condition. In the fat condition they will see 12 figures starting with the skinniest and moving along to the heaviest of 12 under which will be written (or heavier). they will have to indicate their body size. This is done to anchor them at the heavy end of the scale. In the skinny condition participants will see the heaviest figure ordered down to the skinniest of the next 12, under which will be written "or skinnier". This will anchor them at the thin end of the scale. As a manipulation check, we will ask how satisfied they are with their body (7pt Likert very Satisfied to Very unsatisfied). Dependent measure are as follows: 1. To what extent do you believe being overweight is genetically determined? (answered on a 0-100% scale 2. We will then ask to what extent do they believe the mind and body are the same. They will be shown 5 circles in a venn diagram form of increasing overlap. One circle named mind annd one named body. We have previously run this experiment with 7 figures to no effect.
