Wiki Version:
The participants will be approximately 120 undergraduate students in the Nebraska Wesleyan University psychology department participant pool. A requirement for participation in the study will be having normal (approximately 20/20) vision or corrected to normal vision to ensure participants can see the video. Participants under the age of 19 (the age of consent in Nebraska) must have a signed parental consent form on file in the psychology department office to be able to participate. No other groups will be excluded from participating in the study. Data from non-white participants and participants over the age of 25 will be included in the data set but will be removed from data analysis consistent with the requirements of the project. Participants will voluntarily sign-up to participate in the study on a sheet posted outside of the psychology department office. Participants will come to the lab individually. The experimenter will direct the participant to sit at the chair at the desk and close the door to the room. The experimenter will verify that the participant meets the age (over 19 or has parental permission) and vision eligibility requirements for participating in the study. Participants will read and sign, if they agree to participate, two hard copies of the informed consent form. Participants will be tested individually in their own testing room with the experimenter sitting unobtrusively in the room with them. The participants will first watch on the computer monitor a 44-second video that depicts a bank robbery. After the video, the experimental manipulation will take place. One of the following messages will appear on the computer monitor. In the experimental condition participants will be instructed to: Please describe the appearance of the bank robber in as much detail as possible. It is important that you attempt to describe all of his different facial features. Please write down everything that you can think of regarding the bank robber’s appearance. It is important that you try to describe him for the full 5 minutes In the control condition, participants will be instructed to, “Please name as many countries and capitals as you can.” In both the experimental and control conditions, participants will work on the task for 5 minutes and type their answers. After 3 of the 5 minutes, participants in both groups will receive a verbal reminder from the experimenter. In the experimental condition participants will be told, “Please continue describing every detail of the bank robber. It is important that you provide as full a description as possible.” In the control condition participants will be told, “Please continue to list as many countries and capitals as you can. It is important that you continue this task for the full five minutes.” Next, all participants will spend 20 minutes working on a crossword puzzle. Then, participants will view a lineup of 8 faces on the computer and identify the one they saw in the video or report that he was not present. Then participants will complete a questionnaire that includes a confidence rating for their selection in the lineup and demographic information. Lastly, participants will be given a written debriefing form and the study will be verbally explained to them. Data will be collected until November 6. At that time we will to make sure there are a minimum of 50 participants per cell. If not we will continue data collection until the minimum 50 participants per cell has been meet.
