We propose an analysis of exclusive particles that have a second function
as sentential connectors, focusing in this abstract on English 'only'. The
exclusive function of such particles is standardly treated as a
focus-sensitive quantificational operator. This paper addresses how to
extend the analysis to cases where only is used as a sentential connective.
We rely on an argumentative framework, and argue that the connective use is
derived from the exclusive one by a process of semantic bleaching.
