April 14, 2017 - First progress report released: [https://osf.io/8rz9e/][2] ## Scope ## The curation-ready software working group aims to provide guidance, framed by use cases, for making software repositories or catalogs more useable by improving software's "curation readiness". Two perspectives will be explored. The first is the archival/museum perspective which is concerned with providing access to culturally important software and deals mainly with (often commercial) software that has already been released. The second perspective deals with software which is developed or intended for use in academic settings in which curation activities can take place at earlier stages in the software lifecycle. In the next 2 to 3 months, the group will identify use cases from the two perspectives mentioned. Subsequently, the group will articulate what it means for software to be "curation-ready" for those cases. The two perspectives will be compared in order to identify similarities and differences. In the next 6 months, the group will explore the kinds of questions a curator of a (research) software repository could use to elicit information to improve the quality of a software deposit. Comparing the two previously mentioned perspectives will be useful here as well. This exploration could serve as a starting point for a document providing guidance for increasing curation-readiness in the two perspectives. At 6 months, group members will re-evaluate and potentially re-adjust the direction of the group based on the results obtained, and the interest and availability of members and external collaborators.
