Description: Research utilising diffusion MRI (dMRI) neuroimaging protocols have largely relied on single-shell scan acquisition and cross-sectional designs, with most studies applying the conventional DTI model. In this study, we employed a semi-longitudinal design to investigate white matter age trajectories across the adult lifespan based on complementary dMRI models (DTI, DKI, NODDI, RSI, SMT mc, and WMTI) with multi-shell scan acquisition. Our results demonstrate that advanced diffusion models yield the capability of detecting precise measures of age-related white matter microstructural brain changes that complement and extend the contribution of conventional DTI. Variations in age trajectories between the models were also identified, indicating that the continued development of advanced dMRI methodological approaches represents a valuable contribution to the investigation of brain development and ageing.
