Wiki Version:
According to Hyman (2001) and Gussenhoven (2004), languages with downstep in declarative sentences suspend downstep in interrogative sentences, and for Yoruba, a language with downstep in declaratives (Laniran 1992; Connell & Ladd 2001; Laniran & Clement 2003) downstep suspension in questions is expected. However, this claim does not hold universally. For instance for Akan, no suspension of downstep in polar questions has been observed (Kügler 2016). Therefore, this study compares the intonation of declarative sentences in Yoruba with that of polar interrogative sentences to investigate the role of downstep suspension in Yoruba.
