They were asked to complete the story, and we measured which gendered pronouns they used to refer to the character. We find that participants under-estimate feminine referents in all three conditions, with “She” responses not overtaking “He” responses until names were feminine-biased. This effect was strongest in the last name condition, indicating that repeated reference to a feminine referent by last name makes participants less likely to identify them as female.
