The Sukuu Tenabia Edizban Papa Project (STEP-uP) is a mixed methods study exploring food insecurity, food choice diet, and school food environments among adolescents in the Cape Coast Metropolitan Area in the Central Region of Ghana. Sukuu Tenabia Edizban Papa means "Good food in the school food environment". This formative research study attempts to understand the dynamics of food choice, food environments, and food insecurity in order to develop future changes to improve adolescent health and nutrition. We use an innovative, community based participatory research method, photovoice, in which adolescents were provided with cameras and asked to take pictures of their communities and food choices and then discuss their photos in groupd discussions led by trained facilitators. We also conducted in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders including parents , teachers, and school food vendors. We also conducted structured food environment observations and quantitatively assessed food insecurity and diet. We also conducted a stakeholder advocacy meeting where adoelscents shared their findings with key change makers from the community.
