This project page accompanies the PhD project titled 'Meta-linguistic awareness in early (second) language acquisition'. The project is funded by the University of Amsterdam, and carried out at the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication. The PhD project investigates the common assumpution that children learn their first language entirely implicitly and without any conscious awareness of form and grammar. Although the role of meta-linguistic awareness in adult language acquisition is extensively studied such research is virtually absent in the field of child language acquisition. In this project, we investigate whether children develop meta-linguistic knowledge when acquiring a language, and whether children might even benefit from this kind of awareness when acquiring a language. In this project, you can find materials for four experiments. Data and analyses will also be published here, when the accompanying papers are published as well. If you have any questions, feel free to send a mail to S.B.Spit@uva.nl. Please note that the experiments are built onto each other, and were sometimes (partly) designed in parallel. Although we tried to clean them up afterwards as much as possible, you might stumble upon code or files that have no particular function anymore for the experiment. After cleaning, we tested all our experiment again without getting any errors. However, this is no guarantee that errors will not occur in the future. If this happens, do not hesitate to send a mail.
