This paper explores apparent mismatches between syntactic and phonological domains and the phrasing of DPs through penultimate vowel lengthening (PVL) in Chichewa. The domain of PVL has often been included as evidence for the separation of syntactic and phonological domains as it seems to ignore some syntactic domains, and within DPs, it seems to apply only when modifiers are present (e.g., Selkirk 2011, Cheng & Downing 2016, Bonet et al. 2018). However, I argue that through interleaving phonology and syntax, coupled with a consideration of the DP-internal syntax, the syntactic and phonological domains can be fully aligned, allowing for the domains to be computed directly from the syntactic structure via cyclic spell-out without any extrinsic constraints.
