"By 1850, tension over the institution of slavery in the United States was mounting as politicians and citizens debated whether to admit Missouri as a new slave state." This sentence should read "By 1850, tension over the institution of slavery in the United States was mounting as politicians and citizens debated whether to admit territories acquired in the Mexican–American War as slave or free states." The debate over the admission of Missouri occurred in 1819-20 and was resolved by the Compromise of 1820, which added Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state in exchange for a prohibition on slavery north of the 36°30′ parallel.
