Subject: L2 Syntactic Adaptation in Comprehension: Evidence for Implicit Learning
Abstract:
This study investigated whether L2 speakers can adapt to complex target structures (relative clause attachment) during speech comprehension, and if so, what mechanism underlies their adaptation. Two groups of Chinese learners of English showing low attachment (LA) bias at the pre-test were exposed to a block of low attachment or high attachment (HA). The results showed that the group exposed to HA only revealed significant adaptation at the immediate post-test (Day 1) and the delayed post-test (Day 2). These findings provide evidence for L2 speakers’ syntactic adaptation during speech comprehension, suggesting that the error-based learning mechanism may underlie their adaptation.
