Raw data, experimental materials and analysis scripts for Sohoglu and Davis (2020) eLife https://elifesciences.org/articles/58077 **Description of stimuli** Two versions of the stimuli are provided. *stimuli_clear* folder contains original (clear) spoken word stimuli (used by analysis scripts). *stimuli_vocoded* contains the noise-vocoded versions of the stimuli with the naming convention [word] underscore noise underscore [number of vocoded channels] .wav. **Description of data** The MEG data are the preprocessed and epoched versions in SPM 8 format (21 participants X 3 blocks). For details of preprocessing, see Methods in paper. **Description of analysis scripts** All code is in Matlab format (the analysis reported in the paper used Matlab 2013a). First run es_batch_TRF.m, which does the MEG analysis (encoding/decoding). Then run Fig1.m, Fig3.m etc., which generate graphs from the corresponding figures in the paper. mTRFtrain_es_banded.m is a modified version of mTRFtrain.m from the mTRF toolbox that enables banded ridge regression. **Analysis code dependencies** The analysis scripts require the following third-party Matlab code to run successfully: -NSL AUDITORY-CORTICAL TOOLBOX (http://nsl.isr.umd.edu/downloads.html) -mTRF-Toolbox version 1.5 (https://sourceforge.net/projects/aespa/) -NoiseTools version May 2017 (http://audition.ens.fr/adc/NoiseTools/) -SPM 8 release r6313 (https://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/software/spm8/) -mPraat toolbox version 1.0.8 (https://fu.ff.cuni.cz/praat/#mpraat-toolbox-for-matlab) -Noise-vocoding code was adapted from code written by Stuart Rosen and Johannes Lyzenga based on the work of Philip Loizou. This can be provided upon request by emailing Ed Sohoglu (E.Sohoglu@sussex.ac.uk) -Polormap.m (https://uk.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/37099-polarmap-polarized-colormap) -FDRthreshold.m from RSA toolbox (https://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/methods-and-resources/toolboxes/) -barwitherr.m (https://uk.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/30639-barwitherr-errors-varargin) -boundedline.m (https://uk.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/27485-boundedline-m) -text2im.m (https://uk.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/19896-convert-text-to-an-image)
