Wiki Version:
This poster presents an overview of the many types and functions of research data standards. While metadata schema are often included in data management instruction, these are only one example of the standards that are useful for research data. Other examples include standard terminologies, content standards, common data elements, and persistent identifiers. These serve a range of purposes from enabling the search features in a repository to allowing researchers to integrate disparate data sources. By focusing on the functions of the standards, this poster proposes a classificatory matrix that is useful for both data professionals and the research communities they support.
