# About methods and materials There are several files related to the methods and materials of the experiment: - **BES + IRI.xlsx** contains the original English items as well as Dutch translations of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (Davis, 1983) and the Basic Empathy Scale (Jolliffe & Farrington, 2006). - **Complete experiment.pdf** contains a Dutch copy of the main experiment as it was displayed to participants in Qualtrics. This file also contains the stimulus narratives. - **DART (version for general population).docx** contains a Dutch version of the Author Recognition Test as intended for use in the general population, developed by Brysbaert et al. (2020). - **Measures of Character Engagement.xlsx** contains the original English items as well as Dutch translation of the EDI scale (Igartua, 2010; Igartua & Páez, 2008), items developed by Busselle and Bilandzic (2009), and the Comprehensive State Empathy Scale (Levett-Jones et al., 2017). - **Pre-test.docx** contains the questions and items that were used in the pre-test. - **Reading habits.docx** contains the items that were used to measure reading habits. - **Stimulus-design.html** contains the analyses conducted to compare the different versions of each stimulus narrative. - **STOMP - Codebook NL** contains the Dutch Codebook for the Spontaneous Theory of Mind Protocol (Rice & Redcay, 2014).
