Wiki Version:
This folder contains the experiment files and materials to run the test battery and collect the data for the study "Should we stop thinking about inhibition? Searching for individual and age differences in inhibition as a psychometric construct" from Rey-Mermet, Gade, and Oberauer. The test battery was programmed in C/C++ using the Tscope5 library functions, an upgraded version of the original Tscope (Stevens, Lammertyn, Verbruggen, & Vandierendonck, 2006). To run the test battery, you need to downlaod Tscope5 (http://users.ugent.be/~masteven/tscope5/index.html). The main files that run the experiments are called: - `startdemoquestionnaire`: a demographic questionnaire - `form1`: This consists of the following tasks in the following order: 1. number Stroop task 2. letter flanker task 3. antisaccade task 4. Simon task 5. positive and negative compatibility task - `form2`: This consists of the following tasks in the following order: 1. global-local task 2. color Stroop task 3. arrow Flanker task 4. stop-signal task 5. task assesing n-2 repetition costs - `endquestionnaires`: This consists of the following tasks in the following order: - a further demographic questionnaire - SF-36 health questionnaire (Bullinger, 1998) - Beck Depression Inventory II (Hautzinger, Keller, & Kühner, 2006) - Geriatric Depression Scale (Yesavage et al., 1983) Participants were tested during two sessions of approximately 2-2.5 hours each (including breaks after every block and a longer break in the middle of each session). 1. In the first session, participants started with the `startdemoquestionnaire` and then performed half of the tasks measuring inhibition (either `form1` or `form2`). 2. In the second session, participants performed the remaining tasks measuring inhibition (either `form2` or `form1`, respectively), and then they completed the `endquestionnaires`. Please note that the SF-36 Health Questionnaire (Bullinger, 1998), the Beck Depression Inventory II (Hautzinger, Keller, & Kühner, 2006), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (Yesavage et al., 1983) are not included in the present version of the test battery due to copyrights. To start each expeirmentfile (`startdemoquestionnaire`, `form1`, `form2`, `endquestionnaires`), the following steps are necessary: 1. Open the experimentfile with Notepad++ 2. Adapt the screen resolution and refresh rate to your computer: - `display_size_x` - `display_size_y` - `currentrefreshrate` 3. Compile the file (Macro -> Compile Tscope) 4. Run the file (Macro -> Run) Then, you have to enter the following information: 1. `participant ID` (> 1 and < 1000) 2. `age` 3. `age group` (1 = 18-28; 2 = 35-45; 3 = 65+) 4. `experimenter initials` 5. `counterbalacing_battery` (either 1 or 2, depending on the task order across sessions) 6. `counterbalancing` (either c1, c2 or c3; this selects the set of incongruent trials for the color and number Stroop tasks) The data are saved in text format in each respective folder (for example for the color Stroop task: `test` -> `form2` -> `data` -> `colorstroop`). The first time you use a participant ID, this will create the datafile. If you use the same participant ID several times, the data will be written at the end of the already existing datafile. If you want to do only some tasks measuring inhibition, please go to the folder `escape` and then either `form1` or `form2`. Thus, you can select the experimentfile with the desired tasks, that is: - `form1_4tasks`: 1. letter flanker task 2. number Stroop task 3. Simon task 4. positive and negative compatibility task - `form1_3tasks`: 1. number Stroop task 2. Simon task 3. positive and negative compatibility task - `form1_2tasks`: 1. Simon task 2. positive and negative compatibility task - `form1_1task`: 1. positive and negative compatibility task - `form2_4tasks`: 1. color Stroop task 2. arrow flanker task 3. stop-signal task 4. task assessing n-2 repetition cost - `form2_3tasks`: 1. arrow flanker task 2. stop-signal task 3. task assessing n-2 repetition cost - `form2_2tasks`: 1. stop-signal task 2. task assessing n-2 repetition cost - `form2_1task`: 1. task assessing n-2 repetition cost In order that the test battery works properly, please change nothing in the folder structure. To exit the test battery, please press "esc". All materials and instructions are in German. A overview of the block order is given fo each task in the document "overview_blockorder".
