How do we actually ‘see’ ourselves in our mind’s eye? By implementing a reverse correlation technique to the question of self-representations, we were able, for the first time, to visualise participants’ representations of both their faces and their body shapes in a data-driven, unconstrained way, succeeding in visually depicting how the self is ‘seen’ in our minds. We focused on the accuracy of these mental ‘self-portraits’ and how deviations from accuracy were related to higher-level psychological aspects of the self, such as our beliefs about our personality traits and our attitudes towards our bodies.
