The new features that the Hardware in the Loop (HIL) will deliver to ALMA Observatory are multi-fold and will bring significant improvements to increase the available time for science, alleviating the usage of the Baseline Correlator. Moreover, we foresee this concept will remain in future technology advancements, including new approaches for instrument upgrades.
The purpose of this work is to describe the HIL project in its three main topics: 1) Specifications, architecture, and system diagram. 2) Use cases, such as firmware/software testing, hardware test bench, and instrument commissioning. 3) Future opportunities, as in working with real data and synchronism from antennas, developing new characteristics over the same ALMA implementation, while extending the available instrument time for both engineering and software teams.
The contents of this presentation will aid the design team to consider these upcoming resources during the identification of the testing environment for the Next ALMA Correlator.
