Wiki Version:
Sample Size and Sample Demographics In order to ascertain 50 participants per condition (100 total) we aim to collect a total of 120 participants. This will ensure that if participants have to be excluded (see below) we will still have reached the minimum number of participants required for the replication project. Although we will set recruitment parameters within the specified sample characteristics and do not anticipate such a high attrition rate, we want to ascertain that we will at least have the required 100 participants. Randomization We utilized a random number generator to randomly determine the order for 120 participants based on 2 conditions and resulting in equal group size of 60 participants in each condition. If we have to exclude more than 11 participants in one condition we will recruit more participants, but will still utilize the same randomization scheme and oversample rather than simply assign participants to the condition in which we had to exclude participants. We hope to have completed the data collection for the 120 participants by the middle of november, in which case we would have plenty of time to recruit additional participants should we have to exclude more than 11 from one of the conditions. Our participants will be sampled from the Psychology undergraduate student body at the University of North Dakota and the University of Wyoming. We will recruit 60 participants at each location. The student body at both universities is very similar. Both universities are comprised of about 80% Caucasian students. Most undergraduates are between the ages of 18-25. Therefore, we do not anticipate any issues with regard to recruitment of the target population for the study. We will cease data collection once the target sample size has been reached. Data Exclusion Trained research assistant will keep a detailed log of each data collection session. Participants who do one or more of the following will be excluded prior to conducting the recognition accuracy analyses: • Participants did not follow instructions (control or experimental condition) • Participants did not complete all tasks • A computer issue occurred that would compromise the integrity of the data Any excluded data and the reason for exclusion will be identified and included in the data sets. Script for Research Assistants INTRODUCTION SCRIPT “Hello, my name is _________________ and I will be conducting the research session today. Today you will participate in a study called memory and perception. Before you begin the research, you will fill out an informed consent form, which I will give you in a few minutes. First, I want to describe what you will be doing today. You will complete several tasks today, some on the computer and some paper and pencil. Do you have any questions?” HAND PARTICIPANTS THE INFORMED CONSENT FORMS— “Please read this and complete the bottom portion. Just let me know when you are done filling it out.” WHEN PARTICIPANTS HAVE COMPLETED INFORMED CONSENT FORM—“In this first part of the study, I will show you a short video clip. Please pay close attention to the video. Please put your headphones on and then follow the instructions on the computer. INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPUTER TASKS (AFTER THEY HAVE WATCHED THE VIDEO CLIP) Experimental Condition: Please describe the appearance of the bank robber in as much detail as possible. It is important that you attempt to describe all of his different facial features. Please write down everything that you can think of regarding the bank robber’s appearance. It is important that you try to describe him for the full 5 minutes. Control Condition: Please name as many countries and their capitals as you can. It is important that you try to name them for the full 5 minutes. AFTER 3 MINUTES, THE RESEARCH ASSISTANT WILL SAY THE FOLLOWING TEXT AS A REMINDER - “Please continue with your task. It is important that you continue working for the full 5 minutes to provide as complete an answer as possible. There are two minutes left for this task.” ONCE PARTICIPANTS COMPLETED THE COMPUTER TASK, THEY WILL PROMTPOED TO WORK ON THE CROSSWORD PUZZLE LOCATED IN A FOLDER ON EACH DESK. The instructions will read as follows: The next task consists of working on a crossword puzzle. It is important that you work on the crossword puzzle for the full upcoming 20 minutes. Lineup Task The computerized lineup task will present participants with an 8-person simultaneous lineup. The instructions on the computer will read as follows: Next you will see a lineup with 8 faces. Please identify the individual in the line up who you believe was the bank robber in the video you watched earlier. If you do not believe the bank robber is present please indicate 'not present' After participants made a selection, they will provide the confidence rating in their choice. The instructions on the computer will read as follows: Please indicate your confidence in your selection from the lineup on a scale from 1 (guessing) to 7 (certain). Next, participants will provide basic demographic information. Suspicion Questions (on the computer) Some of the tasks we have participants complete on the computer are complicated. Did you have any trouble understanding the instructions for any of the computer tasks? _____ yes _____ no If Yes, please describe the task in which you had difficulty understanding the instructions. After you have described the task, please use the mouse to click on "Continue". Sometimes in psychology experiments people think there is more going on than what they are told. Did you have any thoughts along those lines during today's session? _____ yes _____ no If Yes, please explain the thoughts you had. After you have described the thoughts you had, please use the mouse to click on "Continue". Sometimes students discuss the research they have participated in with others. Did you hear anything about this study before you participated in it today? _____ yes _____ no If Yes, please describe what you heard about the study. After you have described what you heard about the study, please use the mouse to click on "Continue". [IF THE PARTICIPANT TELLS YOU THEY ARE DONE, JUST ASK THEM TO STAY SEATED UNTIL THE OTHER PARTICIPANTS ARE DONE. Make sure they have actually finished the entire study and not just finished one of the tasks. ] DEBRIEFING SCRIPT AFTER THE PARTICIPANTS HAVE COMPLETED FINAL COMPUTER TASKS: “First of all, I would like to thank you for completing the study today. This study is examining how perceptual processes influence what people pay attention to in a witnessed event. Do you have any questions? I would also like to ask for your help by not sharing any information regarding this study with anyone. As you can imagine, if people came into the study knowing what it is about then they might not respond naturally, which would make it very difficult for us to collect accurate information. Information about research studies tends to spread rapidly, and even telling just one person the true purpose of this study could be enough. Can I get your verbal consent that you will not discuss the purpose of the study with anyone or the content of the video clip? [WAIT UNTIL THEY AGREE]. If someone does ask you about this study, you can tell them you watched a video clip, completed several tasks on a computer. Once again, thank you for completing the first part of the study. If there are no more questions, you are free to leave.”
