# Research Data Management Badge The purpose of these badges is to encourage efficient and sustainable management of research data across disciplines and methods. These badges are a way that others can recognize your efforts to improve the quality of your research data and your commitment to the betterment of scientific discourse by making that data as reusable and well-documented as possible. ## Inspiration The inspiration for this project comes from the [Reproducibility Badging Project](http://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://github.com/sr320/tmp-badge/blob/master/rros-badge-web.html) at the University of Washington's [eScience Institute](escience.washington.edu) as a part of the work done by their facet of the [Reproducibility Working Group](http://escience.washington.edu/about-us/working-groups/reproducibility-and-open-science/) from the [Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment](msdse.org) initiative. *** # Badging System To earn your RDM badge, you must tally points in the following categories of data management practice: | Criteria | Points | | ------------- | ------------- | | Have an ORCID | 2pt | | Use an open-source electronic lab notebook (ELN) | 2pt | | Use Open Science Framework as your ELN | 2pt | | Use GitHub as your ELN | 2pt | | Use standardized procedures to collect, process, check, validate and verify data | 8pt | | Implement a systematic file naming and annotation/documentation scheme | 8pt | | Document the contents of folders containing research data with a detailed readme file describing its contents | 8pt | | Implement a functional and secure cloud environment for broad access to your data | 8pt | | Build a code book or data dictionary for one or more datasets | 10pt | | Select a suitable metadata scheme for a dataset and prepare an accompanying metadata file | 10pt | | Back up your data in three different places (e.g. on your computer, on an external hard drive, in the cloud) | 10pt | | Keep a master copy of your data in an archival, open-source format| 10pt | | Implement version control over your data | 10pt | | Preregister a dataset under construction with a repository or open research framework | 10pt | | Place a majority of one's research publications in an open-access environement | 10pt | | Deposit data in an appropriate repository for safekeeping of research data in conjunction with research publication | 10pt | | Link a dataset to a publication with a DOI | 10pt | | Have the results of your publication reproduced by someone else | 25pt | | Perform a reproducibility check for someone else | 25pt | #### Bonus for the NYU Community: | Criteria | Points | | ------------- | ------------- | | Attend 6/9 [Data Management workshops](http://nyu.libcal.com/calendar/classes/?cid=1564&t=d&d=0000-00-00&ct%5B%5D=4295&cm%5B%5D=909&cal%5B%5D=1564) through Data Services | 10pt | | [Book a consultation](http://guides.nyu.edu/appointment) with Nick and Vicky, the NYU data management librarians! | 10pt | # Badges You can also find images of these badges in the "files" of this project.
