Wiki Version:
Lightning talk presented at Research-on-Research (RoR) Registry and Hub Online Festival, on May 16th 2024: AI and research: a promising relationship? ABSTRACT: Background. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has become increasingly popular for many purposes and has found its way into daily practices of education and research. Numerous research institutes have published guidelines and policies on the use of GenAI, highlighting both the pitfalls and the opportunities GenAI offers in this context. Last year, our education department at Hasselt University published the first version of the Framework for using GenAI in higher education. Along with an update of this initial framework, we want to expand the generic guidelines with an overview of GenAI tools for specific research purposes used at the institution. Aim. We aim to collect input from personnel at Hasselt University on how they currently use or want to use GenAI in Research & Education at Hasselt University. Based on the results of this needs assessment, we will develop institutional guidelines for using GenAI by personnel. Currently, we are reviewing the existing guidelines and policies to start drafting our framework for research at Hasselt University. In parallel, we are conducting a survey at the institution to gain insights into the daily GenAI use of researchers and will share the results during this talk. Intended Impact of the Study. The results of the questionnaire will be used to develop the current framework further on the use of generative artificial intelligence in research and education at Hasselt University, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges.
