Wiki Version:
*Emerging Adulthood* invites EAMMi2 contributors to submit *Registered Reports* to the *Emerging Adulthood* journal for a special issue edited by Moin Syed and Brent Donnellan, to be published in 2018, Issue 1 or 2. Registered Reports are a relatively new format in the social sciences. OSF has assembled [an extremely helpful guide][1] that you are encouraged to consult. There is increasing recognition that traditional methods of manuscript submission and peer review tend to give too much weight to the nature of the findings (e.g., statistically significant, consistent findings across studies), contributing to bias in the literature. In contrast, peer review of Registered Reports occurs prior to the data analysis, and thus the review process focuses on conceptualization, methodology, and analysis plan. This means that all hypotheses to be tested must be pre-registered. To quote from the OSF Page: *Registered Reports emphasize the importance of the research question and the quality of methodology by conducting the peer review prior to data collection and analysis. Accepted papers then are virtually guaranteed publication in the journal if the authors follow through with the registered methodology.* The editorial team at *Emerging Adulthood* is interested in exploring Registered Reports as a potential submission option. Accordingly, this call for EAMMi2 Registered Reports is a pilot run for the journal, to test out the new format. Interested authors are strongly encouraged to closely review the OSF page on Registered Reports and should pay special attention to the issue discussed in the [FAQ pertaining to whether pre-registration limits exploratory analyse][2]s. The short answer is that it does not. Rather, pre-registration seeks to make clear distinctions between confirmatory and exploratory analyses. EAMMi2 authors are not required to submit their manuscript to this special issue, but all contributors intending to participate must follow these instructions. Special Issue Guidelines ---------------- ***Intended Authors must*** 1) Attempt to contribute a sample (see [Instructions to Contributors][3] for EAMMi2). Exceptions will be granted upon approval of the EAMMi2 planning committee. 2) Follow the Special Issue Timeline (see below) 3) Complete and receive approval for a [Pregistration Challenge][4] submission from the [Center for Open Science][5]. Instructions for submitting an EAMMi2 preregistered hypothesis are available on the '[apriori hypotheses][6]' EAMMi2 component. 4) Adhere to the Emerging Adulthood journal [submission guidelines][7]. ***Manuscript Guidelines*** 1) The manuscript should generally be prepared as one would prepare any other manuscript, with a few key exceptions. It must include: a) an Introduction that describes the purpose and rationale for the study, outlines the theoretical background, reviews the relevant literature, and clearly states the pre-registered hypotheses. Planned exploratory analysis, for which there is no specific hypotheses, should also be included; b) a Method section describing the sample characteristics, detailed descriptions of all measures that will be included and how they will be constructed, and study procedure, c) a detailed Analysis Plan, describing the analyses that will be conducted to test the pre-registered hypotheses and the analyses to be conducted for any planned exploratory hypotheses (the final report may also include additional, non-planned exploratory analyses). This analysis plan should be as detailed as possible, including the exact tests to be used, the criteria to be used to evaluate the test (e.g., alpha, confidence intervals, effect sizes), all covariates that will be included, potential moderators, any planned follow-up tests, removal of outliers, data transformations, and a power analysis for all tests. The preceding is not an exhaustive list, but rather is intended to convey a sense for the kind of detail that will be required. 2) The manuscript containing the three sections described above will be submitted to *Emerging Adulthood* and subject to peer review. Following the review process, one of the following editorial decisions will be made tentatively accept, reject, or revise and resubmit. Authors must also submit evidence of being approved for the COS Preregistration Challenge. 3) Authors of manuscripts receiving a decision of "tentatively accept" will be invited to submit a final version of the manuscript that includes full Results and Discussion sections. This decision all but guarantees authors that their final manuscript will be accepted for publication, provided that they follow the procedures specified in the original submission. 4) Emerging Adulthood is launching an open science badge program wherein accepted manuscripts can receive up to three badges for a) preregistered hypotheses, b) open data, and c) open materials. [More information about badges is available here.][8] Due to the nature of EAMMI2, all manuscripts accepted for the special issue will receive all three badges. ***Special Issue Timeline Target Dates*** **August, 2016** - soft calls to contributors (access to OSF instructions portal) ****Sept 16th, 2016**** -- target announcement date to SSEA members **January 9th, 2016** -- first submission due date **December 9th, 2016** (EAMMi2 scheduled to complete data collection); authors will have access to data January 10th. Because this is true, authors will receive data shortly after submissions are due. **March 9th, 2017** -- first decisions **May 9th,2017** -- Manuscripts with Analyses due (Authors are given 60 days to conduct analysis and submit final report.) **June 9th, 2017*** -- Decisions on Manuscripts --Initial decisions made within 30 days (reviewed by issue editors). ***June 9th*** --Final Revisions Due ***Issue 1, 2018 Intended Publication Date*** [1]: https://osf.io/8mpji/wiki/home/ [2]: https://osf.io/8mpji/wiki/FAQ%205:%20Scientific%20Creativity%20and%20Exploration/ [3]: https://osf.io/f24aj/ [4]: https://cos.io/prereg/ [5]: http://cos.io [6]: https://osf.io/6mb3f/wiki/home/ [7]: https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/emerging-adulthood/journal202127#submission-guidelines [8]: https://osf.io/tvyxz/wiki/home/
