Wiki Version:
Replication Information Our project is a replication of Griskevicius et. al.'s 2010 Going Green to Be Seen: Status, Reputation, and Conspicuous Conservation, study 1. This study was an investigation of the motives behind buying environmentally friendly, or "green" products. Researchers This replication study will be completed by psychology undergrauate students at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. The Researchers are Alisha I. Payne, Emma M. Walsh, Alexis R. O'Neill, and Kaitlyn M. Kulas. Methods For this research project our group will reach out to students on campus to participate in our research. We will follow Griskevicius's steps for the procedure of this project in order to hopefully replicate the study. For the statistical analysis of this research project, our replication group will utilize the program PASW 18. There are two control conditions: one condition in which the participant reads a story and one condition in which the participant does not read a story. The products the participants choose from will be presented in a random order and it will be recorded which order the participant receives. This component contains all of the materials we have used during our replication. Snowball sampling among students at Loras College. There will be no compensation. The memory questions that serve as a comprehension check will not be checked or recorded since they are part of the cover story. Analysis This will be a between subjects design. The independent variable is a type of a short story (related to status or a control story). The dependent variable is the choice of green or not green product. We will use the same analytical method as the original researchers (a one-way analysis of variance- ANOVA on the product composite and three chi-squared tests on the product choices) to determine if there was a significant effect of status. We will also use descriptive statistics and frequencies to analyze the choices the participants made for the products. Participants The participants for our replication study are studetns from Loras College. The participants will participate by reading a short story and completing a short survey. The only materials for this replication study are two short stories and the survey.
