This repository contains the data frame and code for running analyses in the manuscript titled *"Has Psychology Become More Positive? Trends in Language Use in Article Abstracts"* by Naomi Baes, Henry Speagle, and Nick Haslam - published in Frontiers in Psychology: **https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2022.870549** Naomi Baes prepared this repository, and it contains the following information: **1) data**: Folders containing files for input/output into LIWC software. - **input** folder contains: * **"poschar_dict.dic"**: *".dic file"* containing 23 terms in our custom "Positive Character" dictionary formatted for input into LIWC 2015. - **output** folder contains: * **"df.csv"**: data frame serving as input for **"notebook.rmd"**. It contains index values computed by running the corpus of psychology article abstracts through LIWC 2015 software. *Note:* The corpus was preprocessed by lower-casing tokens and removing punctuation. * **`year`** = the year in which psychology article abstracts appeared (1970-2017) * **`posemo`** = the relative frequency of terms from the LIWC 2015 Positive Emotion dictionary appearing in the corpus * **`negemo`** = the relative frequency of terms from the LIWC 2015 Negative Emotion dictionary appearing in the corpus * **`poschar`** = the relative frequency of terms from the newly constructed Positive Character dictionary appearing in the corpus * **"df_jpp.csv"**: data frame serving as input for **"notebook.rmd"**. It contains positivity index values computed by running the corpus of article abstracts from the Journal of Positive Psychology (JPP) through LIWC 2015 software. * **`year`** = the year in which psychology article abstracts appeared (2007-2017) * **`posemo`** = the relative frequency of terms from the LIWC 2015 Positive Emotion dictionary in the corpus * **`poschar`** = the relative frequency of terms from the custom Positive Character dictionary in the corpus * **"df_poschar.csv"**: data frame serving as input for **"notebook.rmd"**. It contains positivity index values computed by running the corpus of article abstracts from the Journal of Positive Psychology (JPP) through LIWC 2015 software. * **`year`** = year in which abstracts appeared (2006-2017) * **`bravery`: `zest`** = relative frequencies for all 23 terms in the positive character dictionary (23 columns). **2) scripts**: Folder containing script to run analyses and plots - **"notebook.html"**: HTML file documenting code for data visualization and analyses presented in paper. You may download and open it to view. *No software knowledge required.* - **"notebook.rmd"**: R Markdown document containing source code for knitted notebook. *File requires R software*. **3) "READ_ME.txt"**: File documenting folder content (same as Wiki) _____ **Article citation**: Baes, N., Speagle, H. and Haslam, N.
