Wiki Version:
This OSF repository contains the supplementary materials that accompany the manuscript *Deconstructing Implicit Beliefs in Visual Data Journalism: Unstable Meanings Behind Data as Truth & Design for Insight*, accepted to IEEE VIS 2025. Included in this repository are: 1. **Manuscript figures (./1_manuscript-figures/):** Full-resolution versions of the five figures included in the manuscript along with their captions and credits. - Figure 1 (../fig01_teaser.pdf): Conceptual overview of the paper. - Figure 2 (../fig02_analysis.pdf): Worked example of deconstructive analysis as outlined by the steps in Sec 5.2. - Figure 3 (../fig03_objective-subjective.pdf): Overview of our deconstructive analysis for *data as objective/subjective truth*. - Figure 4 (../fig04_humanism-mechanism.pdf): Overview of deconstructive analysis for *design for humanistic/mechanistic insight*. - Figure 5 (../fig05_genealogy.pdf): Overview of our genealogical analysis. - Figure 5I (../fig05I_statistical-graph.pdf): Statistical graph example. - Figure 5L (../fig05L_scrollytelling.pdf): Scrollytelling example. - Figure 5N (../fig05N_epidemic-curve.pdf): *Flatten the Curve* example. - Figure captions and credits (figure_description.pdf). 2. **Semi-structured interview guides (./2_interview-guide/):** - Pilot version (../interview-guide-PILOT.pdf). - Final version used with participants (../interview-guide-FINAL.pdf). 3. **Deconstructive analysis sample (3_interview-analysis.pdf):** A description of the deconstructive analysis that we applied to our interview corpus. We also include screenshots from our FigJam group discussion board. Analyses have been cleaned of any information that may identify individual participants. 4. **Participant quotations (4_participant-quotations.pdf):** Participant statements that we present in the manuscript, both in their original form as they appear in the transcript as well as their paper form revised for readability, i.e., revised for truncation, grammar, extraneous filler words. 5. **Copy of the manuscript accepted to IEEE VIS 2025 (5_zhang_2025_deconstructjournalism.pdf):** We suggest viewing this file on the desktop in Adobe Acrobat, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome, as other applications such as Mac Preview do not render the figures properly. Please note that individual interview transcripts cannot be included as they contain extensive identifying and other contextual information that would breach participant confidentiality, e.g., discussion related to participants' specific roles, tasks, and/or named relationships with colleagues or others.
