Implementation of the official protocol --------------------------------------- *Note: The NL translations have been uploaded to the file section.* **Experimenters** Experimenters for the study will be trained on the specific protocol. They consist of bachelor-level and master’s-level research assistants who either volunteer or are the hired lab assistants for our lab. They do not have experitise in ego-depletion as a topic, but do have experience expertly conducting studies in the lab. **Piloting / training** Research assistants practiced the protocol on each other. They also practiced in the lab space (without participants). **Recruiting** Studies for the lab are advertised in the online system, as well as in flyers around campus, as Studies in the ESP lab (ESP = Experimental social psychology). Students are typically psychology bachelors students, but there are sometimes students with other majors/minors. **Sample, subjects, and randomization** Our lab is organized such that data is collected for one week at a time. Typically, data from between 100 and 200 participants can be collected within one week. We plan to collect data for one week. If data from 100 native-Dutch speakers who between 18-30 years old are not collected after the first week (i.e. 50/condition), then we will collect data for an additional week and data collection will stop at the end of that second week. The first task of the study is a short demographics survey that includes a question for native language, age, and gender. If participants are non-native Dutch speakers, younger than 18, or over 30 then we will exclude them from analyses and exclude them from our participant count. We will generate four random sequences of 50 participants, with each sequence containing 50% for each condition. The first sequence of 50 will be used until we have 25 participants in each condition who are native-Dutch speakers. When a person is dropped from a condition (e.g., non-native speaker, computer problems), this condition will be repeated at the end of the sequence of 50. Once we go through the first sequence of 50 we will start on the second sequence of 50 using the same method until there are 25 complete responses in each condition. The procedure will be repeated for the third and fourth sequence of 50 as long as data collection continues (i.e. until the week ends). This will ensure random assignment to condition and a minimum of 50 participants per condition. **Setting/Lab/Equipment** Participants who arrive to our lab first come to a waiting room. When it is their turn to participate they are taken to small individual rooms that are largely sound proof and consist of a small desk, a computer, and a flat screen monitor. There is a buzzer/intercom system that the participant can use to signal for the experimenter when the task is finished or if they have problems with the task. A picture of the small experimental rooms (i.e. cubicles) is in the files section. Participants will typically be run two at a time, but staggered so that the experimental manipulation and the primary DV are consistently separated by the same amount of time. When two test leaders are available to run participants at the same time, then we will run four, staggered. Each test leader will be responsible for two pariticpants. We will use the E-Prime runtime license provided by the RRR. It is version: 2.0.10.353 Computers are Dell OptiPlex. They run Windows 7 Enterprise with Service Pack 1. They have InterCore2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz. Each has 4GB RAM and a 64bit OS. The flatscreen monitors have 1680X1050 resolution and use the generic Windows drivers (i.e. no particular graphics card).
