Wiki Version:
Objective: This scoping review aims to summarize the impact of prescription medicine use on work-related outcomes and adverse events in workers with injury and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Introduction: A wide range of medicines such as opioids, antidepressants, benzodiazepines and NSAIDs are prescribed for workers with injuries and musculoskeletal disorders to improve symptoms and assist the recovery. The relationship between some medicines (e.g., opioids) and work outcomes was often reported in the literature. However, summarized evidence is scarce for a broader prescription medicines impact on work-related and safety outcomes in injured workers and MSDs. Inclusion criteria: This review will consider studies of working age (18+ years) who have experienced work-related injuries/MSDs and received any prescription medicine. Studies will be eligible if the relationship between medicine use and work-related outcomes (e.g., time off work, absenteeism, return to work, functional improvement) and adverse events in workers with injuries and MSDs were reported. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method studies, review articles, government or benefit scheme reports will be considered for inclusion. Methods: The Joanna Briggs Inistitute(JBI) methodology for scoping reviews will guide this review. The electronic bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus and Cochrane library) will be used as a primary source of information. Grey literature will also be utilized as an additional source of information. Studies published in the English language since 2000 will be included. Two independent reviewers will screen titles, abstracts, and full texts for the inclusion of studies. Numerical descriptions, qualitative and narrative summary of prescribed medicine, work-related outcomes and safety outcomes of medicine use in work-related injuries and MSDs will be described.
