It is unclear whether opportunistically breeding females undergo a cycle of recrudescence and regression or if they maintain gonadal development across breeding stages and events. We therefore tracked variation in female reproductive tract morphology across breeding stages of a single reproductive episode (i.e. from pre-breeding, through nesting, until fledging of chicks) in the zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata.
