Negative polarity items (NPIs) are lexical items which are grammatically
licensed by a structural relationship with a negative licensor. NPI
illusion is the relative acceptability of sentences where a negative
element does *not* c-command the NPI compared to sentences with no negative
elements. Tag questions, like NPI, are sensitive to the polarity of the
clause to which they are attached. However, these elements don’t have any
explicit licensing relationship with negation. We find evidence that
inaccessible negation influences the processing of tag questions, much like
it does for NPI, indicating that licensing may not be a necessary component
for illusion, and polarity illusions may extend beyond just NPI.
