Description: The function and purpose of annotations requires careful consideration when they are operating within 3D spatial history models in the Scalar platform for the digital publication, Apartheid Heritage(s). This brief discussion will reflect on how function and space were considered when addressing the issue of annotating a spatial digital humanities project. Crafting annotations that emphasized histories and spaces that challenged the normative narratives or places of memory making in Scalar offered opportunities and unique challenges. Opportunities in that annotations could be non-linear gateways to new informative spaces and challenging in that every choice needed to be specific, consistent, and user-friendly.
