**Slides for two training sessions on Pre-registration aimed at PhD students in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Department of Psychology at the University of Sheffield.** First delivered: 2023-11-01 and 2023-11-15 **Event description:** Session 1 Pre-registration - the basics This event is aimed at PGRs and research staff in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Department of Psychology. “You must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool”. So said Richard Feynman about the process of doing research and acquiring knowledge. Pre-registering is a way to avoid fooling yourself and others, and to increase the transparency of your research. A pre-registration is a clear statement of your intended research plans - what your research question is and how you plan to collect and analyse data to address that question. This statement is time-stamped and can be openly published before any data is collected and analysed. This helps you keep on track and avoid the temptation to distort your methodology in pursuit of positive results. It also highlights your research’s integrity, giving others greater confidence in your work. In this one-hour session, researchers and library staff will outline why pre-registration is important and how to pre-register your planned research. The session will be followed a few weeks later by an optional two-hour workshop to help you prepare your own pre-registration. Session 2 Preregistration - the basics - writing workshop Intended for those who have already attended the one-hour session on 1 November, this session is for those who would like to begin work on your own pre-registration with support from library staff and researchers experienced with pre-registration. Please bring a laptop or device with you to the session. Attendees are not required to stay for the full two hours, only as long as is useful to you. **Scope/audience:** The examples used are Social Sciences / Psychology ones, but the content could easily be adapted for a more general session on pre-registration.
