Wiki Version:
The variety of salts on the market can lead to confusion and consumer exploitation. Several claims exist that salts may vary in taste quality, mineral composition and sodium content. Claims have been made that Himalayan sea salt in particular contains 84 trace elements that are beneficial to the health of the human body (Hendel & Ferreira, 2003). Multiple websites suggest the health benefits of Himalayan sea salt include vibrational balance, supporting a healthy libido, and curing illnesses (“Amazing Health Benefits.” 2016; Hendel & Ferreira, 2003). The Himalayan salt craze is a multi-million dollar industry which now includes Himalayan sea salt lamps, which are purported to reduce allergies, improve mood, and neutralize electromagnetic radiation; and halotherapy rooms where clients spend between $15 to $60 to spend a half hour in a room lined with pink Himalayan sea salt. The researchers believe our study is the first of its kind to examine taste differences among different types of salt along with an analysis of the number of trace elements across brands of Himalayan sea salt and if those trace elements found are enough to provide health benefits.
