Description: This pre-registered cross-sectional exploratory analysis of a population-based neuroimaging cohort aims to investigate whether circulating plasma cholinesterase (pChE) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) relate to biomarkers of systemic inflammation IL-6 and CRP and could predict differences in brain morphology (brain volumetric measures, white matter lesion load (WMLL) and brain age (BA)) assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in n=1500 non-demented individuals. It shall contribute to the understanding of the functioning of the brain-controlled cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP), the major agent of neuroimmune responses to inflammation and give answers on whether circulating cholinesterases could be used as biomarkers for systemic inflammation.
