### Preregistration for Application of Mathematical and Computational Models ### **Scope and Background** Preregistration is the process of specifying project details, such as hypotheses, data collection procedures, and analytical decisions, prior to conducting a study. It is designed to make a clearer distinction between data-driven, exploratory work and a-priori, confirmatory work. Both modes of research are valuable, but are easy to unintentionally conflate. See the [Preregistration Revolution][1] for more background and recommendations. Model application involves studies where an existing model (assumed to provide an adequate representation of the underlying process) is applied to empirical data to provide insight into how the process operates in that new paradigm. Model application typically involves confirmatory research questions similar to those in traditional experimental research and can benefit from the a-priori specification of model application and evaluation in preregistration. This template is currently a draft, but the first version is available to use.
