Wiki Version:
Here we provide some notes about the materials on this OSF page. **With respect to our data files** We note that the data for Studies 1-2 is in long form (with one observation per subject per vignette). We also note that the data for our behavioral paradigm studies omits subjects' responses to free-response questions about how subjects made their decisions and any impressions they had about the study; these are excluded for privacy reasons. Finally, we note that each data file includes a guide to the meaning of each of our variables. The descriptions of variables provided in this guide are intended to convey what each variable is, but the language used is not always the verbatim language that we presented to participants. For verbatim language, please see our experimental materials. **With respect to our experimental materials** All experiments were conducted using qualtrics survey software. For each experiment, we have included the .qsf file for the survey, which can be uploaded to qualtrics, as well as a PDF from the "print survey" feature on qualtrics. This PDF shows all elements of the survey as they were shown to participants; however, in cases where there are multiple experimental conditions, it shows all condition versions without specifying which element corresponds to which condition. Thus, to gain a full understanding of the experimental conditions, survey flow, randomization, etc, please upload the .qsf files to qualtrics. We also note that these are "cleaned up" versions of our surveys in which we have removed consent and debriefing forms. Furthermore, we note that some of our experiments targeted subjects who identified either as Democrats or Republicans; subjects who reported the other political party affiliation were redirected to complete other tasks. These other tasks have been removed from our surveys. Thus, our surveys that were designed for Democrats only function properly for users who answer the question about political party affiliation as a Democrat, and vice versa for our surveys that were designed for Republicans. Finally, we note that, with the exception of our validation study (which was conducted chronologically last), the surveys for all studies had the same “look and feel” / theme, but the theme we used is no longer supported by Qualtrics. What this means is that unfortunately, uploading the .qsf files to Qualtrics does not currently create a survey that displays with an identical look and feel to what subjects actually saw. Moreover, using the “export => print” feature on Qualtrics to generate a PDF did not always exactly recreate what subjects saw. **The PDF file for Study 6 provides an example that does accurately recreate the “look and feel” that subjects in all studies (besides the validation study) saw. Please see this as a reference for the style that was actually shown for all studies (besides the validation study).** For the validation study, see the validation study PDF, which accurately represents that study's true look and feel.
