This research project will examine temporal trends in the award of research grants in Australia by the two main funding bodies: The Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) according to awardee gender.
The research will examine temporal trends from 2000 to 2020 according to gender of the lead investigator and gender composition of the investigator team, accounting also for variability due to other factors (e.g., academic level of investigators, grant scheme, field of research, prestige of the host university). Funding amounts will also be examined as a function of some of these factors.
At the time of pre-registration, the data records included a total of 50,734 ARC and NHMRC grant awards to 19,597 unique lead investigators (omitting duplicates of lead investigators who were awarded several grants):
- ARC: 29,472 awards to 12,508 individuals who applied between 2001 and 2020
- NHMRC: 21,262 awards to 8,586 individuals who applied between 2000 and 2020
