Project summary --------------- Terrestrial animals feed on fruit dropped by arboreal frugivores in tropical forests around the world. In this study we investigate interspecific associations in a Neotropical frugivore community. We test the hypothesis that terrestrial frugivores alter their movement in response to the foraging behavior of arboreal primates. We used a combination of acoustic playback experiments, camera trapping, GPS tracking, and phenological monitoring to quantify the frequency of such interactions, determine who initiates and maintains spatial associations, and test whether terrestrial animals adopt a strategy of acoustic eavesdropping to locate fruit patches created by foraging primates. Data were collected on Barro Colorado Island in Panama in 2015 and 2017. MCC, DC, RK, BTH and LWH formulated the idea and designed the protocols. RWH, LTH, MCC, BTH, RK and LWH collected data. LWH, JCL, SEA, RWK, MNG and DC analyzed data and prepared figures. Code for all analyses are on [github][1] Data metadata ------------- **PB.csv**: Playback experiments, generated from acoustic playback audio recording and camera trap images. Includes the date of each experiment, the location and experimental treatment, the time and duration of each experiment, and the number of camera trap events. Used in **Playback_Analysis.R** **PB_posthock.csv**: Contains all data in PB.csv, but combined all four experiments and controls as per request of subject editor. Used in **Playback_posthoc_analysis_SupplementaryFigure.R** **dyadDurat_18.csv**: Generated by **Dyadic_dist18.R**, isolated 2017-18 movement data where collared animals have an encounter within 20m of each other. Data used in **KMLs.R** **dyadDurat_16.csv**: Generated by **Dyadic_dist16.R**, isolated 2015-16 movement data where collared animals have an encounter within 20m of each other. Data used in **KMLs16.R** **LInnea_comp_matrix.csv**: Defines the species whose encounters should be compared for this analysis. For use in **Randomizations.R** **Linnea_id_data.csv**: Declares the species of each individual, and notes which individuals belong to the same stable social group, and should thus be considered as a single individual. For use in **Randomizations.R** **time_periods.csv**: Defines the two distinct time periods of the study, for use in **Randomizations.R** **Linnea final_rand.csv**; **Linnea final_real.csv**, **Linnea out_poly_rand.csv**; **Linnea out_poly_real.csv**; **Linnea poly_rand.csv**; **Linnea poly_real.csv** are produced and used in **Randomizations.R** **CameraSetup.csv**: Contains information about when each camera trap was set up and removed. For use in **cam_gps_merge.R** **CameraTrapCSV** folder: data on the presence of animals in the camera trap imagery, derived from manual inspection of the images. These data are used in **cam_gps_merge.R** **MonkeyGPS2.csv**: contains the times at which collared monkeys enter and exited identified Dipteryx trees. These data are generated by **ftt recurse dip.R** and are used in **cam_gps_merge.R** **wait_times.csv**: The time lag between terrestrial frugivores appearing in camera trap photos, with information about whether a monkey was in the tree where the camera trap was place, and if so, when the monkey entered and exited the tree. Generated from the raw camera trap images, movement data, and the dipteryx shapfiles. Used in **mixture_model_for_Biotropica.R** **CoatiDipDurationMins.csv**: Duration of colared coatis within dipteryx polygons, with and without presence of collared primates.
